Most sources are designed to deliver up to 1 Volt for full output from your amplifier. Digital sources, such as CD and DVD players, however, give more than 2 Volts maximum output.

As your amplifier is almost certainly designed to give its full output power from a 1 Volt input or less, this extra output from Digital sources means that the operation of your volume control may be 'cramped' near the bottom of its travel.

At best this can result in channel imbalance and difficulty in adjusting listening levels. At worst the high output of Digital sources, combined with their high levels of ultrasonic noise and distortion, can result in harshness and gritty treble performance.

These attenuators are made specifically to reduce the input level of a Digital source allowing your amplifier to operate with easier control of level setting, better channel balance for a more stable and open soundstage, and less likelihood of overload due to ultrasonic noise for a smoother, cleaner sound.
